If counting to ten
slows our response, what would
bring us to a complete stop?
~
Physicists would say
entropy is the ticket.
But for me, it’s Accounting!
If counting to ten
slows our response, what would
bring us to a complete stop?
~
Physicists would say
entropy is the ticket.
But for me, it’s Accounting!
But can we embrace
The light, simply by taking
A moment to see our world?
~
By making time to
see what lies before us, we
can embrace both dark and light.
Why do we hurry
through our days when we know night
will come soon enough?
~
Perhaps we distract
ourselves with endless motion
to avoid encroaching dark.
Gazing upon blank
Paper, lost in the texture.
With what should I sully it?
~
Sometimes the greatest
of bards must wait to see what
comes to fill this space.
What would you suggest
is important to include
in an anti-despair kit?
~
In case of despair
grab a pad, sharpen the pencil,
and write yourself a life raft.
If it’s all about
journey, not destination,
what yardstick measures progress?
~
It’s how you get there
that counts, not where you’re headed
or when you arrive.
If there’s some secret
known only to a few that brings
happiness, what is it?
~
The secret is known
to all. But, perhaps, it’s just
well hidden in the darkness.
On discovery:
Of things undiscovered,
What happens to happiness?
~
What brings happiness
can lie in plain sight and still
go undiscovered.
Now that we’re one day
into the New Year, what else
have you discovered that’s new?
~
Discovery will
unfold like origami
cranes, deconstructed by time.
So. It’s a new year.
Why does this passage of time
fail to imbue me with joy.
~
Joy resists schedules,
specific dates, appointed
times. It visits when it will.
At this very point,
when the old ends and the new
begins, what should we anoint?
~
Anoint newness with hope
as the old evanesces
into historic annals.
Since years always pass,
isn’t it better to note
as they come not when they’re gone?
~
While it is good
to note comings and goings,
it’s great to be present now.
What I want to know
is where did the years go and
how can we find them?
~
They pass, as always,
at the usual pace.
We must notice them passing.
With the end of all
this holiday hurry and
rush, is NOW the time for peace?
~
Ah, if we can but
pause and breathe the mayhem might
be replaced by peace.
Any suggestions
for how best to move into
the new year that lies ahead?
~
By celebrating
achievements and forgiving
ourselves for failures.
If God so loved
the world that he gave his son,
what became of his daughter?
~
A better question
might be, can we all, sons and
daughters, live God’s love on earth?
If you could unwrap
only one gift for the whole
world, what would it be?
~
My gift for the world
must remain encased, always,
safe inside Pandora’s Jar!
In this festive time,
What message would you send to
Those few souls who find no joy?
~
The message brought to
us on that first Christmas Day
was love unconditional.
What’s with all these twelves –
days of Christmas, number of
apostles, months in a year?
~
Busy taking steps!
But twelve is significant
Here too, I gather.
Would Rudolph enjoy
their green-eyed jealousy
if his belly weren’t yellow?
~
Hmm – red, yellow, green –
stop, go, and in between – some
subliminal message here?
If you were going
to make a guess what made
Rudolph’s nose glow red?
~
Rudolph, like Hogarth,
the therapist in me says,
likely loved “Christmas Cheer”!
Does the bright red suit
symbolize seasonal joy,
or do the clothes make the man
~
A larger question
might be what manner of man
would pick clothes like those.
Why was ma in her
kerchief and pa in his cap
in the middle of the night?
~
Surely you recall
what it’s like to be dressed
up but have no place to go?
Can seeking silence
yield a more stunning chorus
than reveling in music?
~
Contemplatives say
in seeking silence we may
find a music more sublime.
All those years ago
when you listened for Santa’s
sleigh, what did you hear?
~
Myths and legends claim
there should be bells and hoof beats
but I heard Julie Andrews!
It’s tough not to cry
In the face of Old Nick’s lies.
Is indignation better?
~
Don’t let Old Nick snag
you with his lasso of lies.
Tie him in knots with laughter.
If angels dance on
the head of a pin, what is
the devil’s venue?
~
The Supreme Courthouse?
House of Representatives?
The C.I.A. Headquarters?
Why do we allow
the mongers to peddle us
fear in these wholesale job lots?
~
We’ve forgotten how
to laugh them out of business.
Let’s begin right now.
When fear takes over
what becomes of honor? Where
do mind and heart go?
~
Fear freezes the heart,
enshrouds the mind in mist, and
honor takes a nap.
Please, can we not stand
together and united
against rampant injustice?
~
Perhaps we’ll listen
to ourselves pledge liberty
and justice for all.
