When hunger rumbles
deep within our starving souls,
what repast will fill the void?
~
When the soul hungers
the divine rejoices to
have a chance to fill the void.
When hunger rumbles
deep within our starving souls,
what repast will fill the void?
~
When the soul hungers
the divine rejoices to
have a chance to fill the void.
If you were planning
a menu for a full life,
what would you include?
~
A meaty vocation,
an aged vintage romance,
and some salty memories.
A warm loaf of bread,
a cool jug of wine and thou…
Did Khayyám miss anything?
~
A bit of heaven
such as this needs only deep
gratitude to be complete.
Is there anything
better than a golden end
to a rain soaked day?
~
A golden Lager
and tropical cabana
might win by a nose…
Considering meals,
is it quality food or
company that makes the day?
~
Even quality
food turns to mush when we dine
with company less sublime.
Is it better to
sup with jays or eat crow? – a
major question of our times
~
A meal with either;
Heaven for the introvert.
No burdensome social noise!
Why do we struggle
to control actions beyond
us before we leash our own?
~
To control or not
to control – what, when and how –
those are the questions.
When frustration rules
and patience flees, how can we
regain our own sovereignty ?
~
What is sovereignty?
Freedom to choose? Or control?
Control is an illusion!
Is it a comfort,
when viewing the road ahead,
that we’ve gotten where we are?
~
It all depends on
whether we are behind bars
or walking free.
When we so yearn for
solid ground, what will help us
on this uneven terrain?
~
For a species born
in trees, unused to ground,
surely comfort can be found.
When facing a fight
will weapons and wits win us
wars or weave us worse worries?
~
First we must learn what’s
worth fighting for and then do
our best to win without war.
So, all in all what
would you say to those who think
pens are mightier than swords?
~
Swords might cut or kill
but mighty pens might heal, which
simple swords might never do.
Writing may help fill
our spiritual void;
what else might it accomplish?
~
Writing can also
empty our ego as we
struggle to give the void form.
What more can be said
by orators or poets
that hasn’t been said before?
~
As much can be said
as can be seen and be felt.
Thus is poetry’s power.
If we just follow
the faith deep within our hearts,
can we not find paths to peace?
~
Ah, but there’s the rub.
We must first find the time to
meet the faith that lies within.
What can the world’s faiths
teach us when they seem at such
odds with each other?
~
They may speak their truth,
these Rabbis, Imams and Priests,
but true faith, dwells within.
And while we’re looking
beyond obvious meanings,
what’s up with the nightly news?
~
Whether night or day,
the news, though changing, remains
the same -some good, mostly bad.
Do you really think
Jack and Jill went up that hill
to fetch a pail of water?
~
It seems more likely
they struggled up that slope
to flee an older sibling!
When the road is dark
And the path most unclear,
Where is our guiding beacon?
~
When what’s outside can’t
mark the path, we must then turn
to an inner light.
Where do we turn when
there’s no where to turn and we’ve
clearly lost our way?
~
When we’ve lost our way,
one good turn or another
is as good as going home.
Is political
apathy a cousin to
compassion fatigue?
~
The best of kin learn
to take care of themselves as
well as each other.
If counting to ten
slows our response, what would
bring us to a complete stop?
~
Physicists would say
entropy is the ticket.
But for me, it’s Accounting!
But can we embrace
The light, simply by taking
A moment to see our world?
~
By making time to
see what lies before us, we
can embrace both dark and light.
Why do we hurry
through our days when we know night
will come soon enough?
~
Perhaps we distract
ourselves with endless motion
to avoid encroaching dark.
Gazing upon blank
Paper, lost in the texture.
With what should I sully it?
~
Sometimes the greatest
of bards must wait to see what
comes to fill this space.
What would you suggest
is important to include
in an anti-despair kit?
~
In case of despair
grab a pad, sharpen the pencil,
and write yourself a life raft.
If it’s all about
journey, not destination,
what yardstick measures progress?
~
It’s how you get there
that counts, not where you’re headed
or when you arrive.
If there’s some secret
known only to a few that brings
happiness, what is it?
~
The secret is known
to all. But, perhaps, it’s just
well hidden in the darkness.
On discovery:
Of things undiscovered,
What happens to happiness?
~
What brings happiness
can lie in plain sight and still
go undiscovered.
Now that we’re one day
into the New Year, what else
have you discovered that’s new?
~
Discovery will
unfold like origami
cranes, deconstructed by time.
