When we’ve prepared for
hurricanes that don’t hit, why
is there some disappointment?

Do we, secretly,
long to shout defiant rage
into some almighty’s face?
What makes it so hard
to look beneath the hard ground
of anger and see the fear?

For many, anger
is a well worn shoe, but fear
too terrifying to behold.
When under stress what
helps us remember to take
a breath, much less count to ten?

Breathing is easy!
One must inhale to bellow.
The counting is the hard part.
How do we begin
to transform the grapes of wrath
into communion wine?

Strip first, the bitter
skin of anger and vengeance,
then ferment the heart and soul.
