How can one distill
a lifetime’s experience
down to one meaningful page?

One sentence might do:
“I learned not to waste my time
frequenting distilleries.”
Writing poetry
can open the closed window
of my fearful mind.

Perhaps the closed mind
was to keep something hidden
from the blinding light of day?
Starting seeds indoors
lacks the smell of the soil
heated by the mid-day sun.

Soon the seeds will sprout
and in no time you’ll both be
sweating in the sun.
On April Fool’s Day
we honor the huge genius
whose initials are D.T.

Some fools are too huge,
at least within their own mind,
to be praised for just one day.
Why could this virus
not make some people turn mute?
That is one I’d gladly spread!

Would that those spreading
the virus of blame, shame and
misinformation went mute.
“If you can’t be kind,
be quiet” If we took this
to heart, you’d hear a pin drop.

but no one’s there to hear it,
does it make a sound?
Must we all endure
some great terrible crisis
to learn what is important?

To focus on the
shortage of toilet paper
or not becomes the question.
In line, on line or
out of line, we are all still
strangely connected.

People will connect
any way they can work out
being social animals.
What absurdities
will be presented today
at the President’s briefing?

Chief among them will
be the cheat and whatever
the !@# he chooses to speak.
Searching for answers
that make some sense? The White House
is not the place you should look.

The wheels in his mind,
like a gyroscope spinning,
always working an angle.
Real information,
long a conference premium,
dominates the news.

What? Has this crisis
somehow caused a miracle
and brought Fox into the fold?
Wishing the rain would
wash away the mind’s debris,
water hope instead.

A mental lavage
requires stronger solvents
than gently falling water.
What if I come back
to the place I fell safest?

much we need them now.

a different use earlier?

could that money have been spent;
paying pandemic planners?
While the whole house sleeps
the only soul that’s stirring
finds his moment of quiet.

If you have pets, it’s
just a moment; then nonstop
pleas for attention begin.
Every day we could
become a little wiser
if we would but try.

It’s not the trying,
but the real, heart felt, intent
that leads to finding wisdom
Doing the right thing
often goes unrewarded
and sometimes gets ridiculed.

Yet there are always
those who find the strength to do
what’s right anyway.
Right now we’re focused
on hand sanitizers when
mouth sanitizers would help.

No antiseptic
can hope to contain the spread
of some fool’s noxious wind.
The new March Madness?
A basketball tournament
held in empty stadiums?

A long shot it was,
but sanity did return
and March Madness was dispelled.
Difficult times, which
produce a dark overlay,
can also be used as mulch.

Abundant riches,
amassing at least waist deep,
yield a greener Capitol?
After long winter,
stuck in cold, gray frustration,
what new blossoms will erupt?

A quickening comes,
curiosity stirs when
green buds unfurl before us.
When you finally
can catch a breath, remember
to savour the chance.

And in breathing deep,
remember that the labour
was, too, a thing to savour.
You’ll know burn-out when
a sudden separation
yields no feeling but relief.

Sometimes it’s just time
to book it and write a more
fulfilling chapter.
Where do we turn when
the tried and true go untried
or might not be true.

Use the tried and true,
but also go with your gut;
a layered defense is best.
